Choosing your hot water system
We specialise in gas hot water systems but we’re happy to help you enjoy hot water from any energy source you choose. We help customers install and maintain hot water systems that are powered by gas (mains supply), LPG, solar, electricity, wetback fire (water storage option) and more.
Hot water systems break down into 2 categories: Continuous Flow/On Demand Hot Water Systems and Cylinder Hot Water Systems. The system you choose will depend on your preferred energy source, your budget, and what kind of hot water supply you need.
Continuous Flow Hot Water Systems
If you’re looking for a hot water system that won’t run out of hot water, is efficient, and can be located in or outside your house: you could be looking for a Continuous Flow Hot Water
System. Continuous Flow Hot Water Systems are a popular choice in modern homes and new builds and work best with higher water pressure.
Continuous Flow Hot Water Systems deliver a continuous flow of hot water that’s available when you need it, and stops using energy when you don’t. The result is a hot water system that has a reputation for efficiency because you don’t pay for what you don’t use. It’s a versatile solution that allows you to cope with the fluctuating demands of family members or house guests without running out of hot water.
Continuous Flow Hot Water Systems are only available with gas – either mains supply or LPG. East Coast Plumbing and Gas are your Rinnai Authorised Service Agent for Rinnai Infinity Hot Water systems in Hawke’s Bay.
Cylinder Hot Water Systems
Cylinder Hot Water Systems can be powered by any energy source, and we can install your hot water cylinder inside or outside your home. Because heated water is stored in the cylinder, these hot water systems can be a preferred choice if you have low to medium water pressure, as the output from the cylinder can still be strong.
Hot water cylinders can work well if you want access to lots of hot water all the time. If you’re a frequent user of a bath then having hot water waiting can be an efficient way to fill the tub. It’s often a good option for smaller households where you know that a cylinder of hot water is going to meet the needs of the whole family.
Other benefits of a Cylinder Hot Water System include access to hot water during a power cut – as you can access any residual hot water left in the tank – and if installed inside, a hot water cylinder can be beneficial in heating an airing cupboard and creating a warm dry space for storage.
Cylinder Hot Water Systems can also be integrated into central heating systems.
Hot Water Heat Pump Systems
Hot Water Heat Pumps use the latest technology to deliver hot water for your home. Hot Water Heat Pumps are a popular choice if you want to minimise your use of energy, leading to lower bills for your hot water heating.
A Hot Water Heat Pump uses the same technology as other heat pumps in your home. The main difference is that where a standard heat pump exchanges heat between air and air, your hot water heat pump exchanger works from air to water.
Hot Water Heat Pumps include a hot water cylinder, heating water so it’s ready for you to use when you need it. East Coast Plumbing and Gas recommend the Rinnai HydraHeat® Integrated Hot Water Heat Pump which comes in 2 sizes – 275L or 340L – so you can choose the right size of hot water cylinder for the needs of your home.
Maintenance of your hot water system
Looking after your Continuous Flow Hot Water System is important if you want to protect your product warranty and make sure you get maximum value from your investment.
We recommend you get your Continuous Flow Hot Water Systems serviced at least every 2 years.
It’s also important to be aware that because these systems are powered by gas, if you experience a long and strong earthquake; it may be advisable to get all connections checked by a qualified professional.
There are some simple steps you can take to get the best value from your Cylinder Hot Water System.
If you have an older hot water cylinder; make sure it’s fitted with an insulating jacket to stop heat from escaping. This can have a big impact on the cost of running your hot water system.
In some Hawke’s Bay homes you may find that the water pressure coming onto your property is too high and can cause damage to your water cylinder. In this case a limiting valve should be installed to protect your Cylinder Hot Water System. You can read more about this in our Expert Article on Hawke’s Bay’s water pressure challenges.
For all Cylinder Hot Water Systems, we recommend carrying out an annual visual inspection to make sure you don’t see any leaks. Valves should be checked annually by a registered Master Plumber.
After earthquakes we recommend visually inspecting your hot water cylinder for signs of leaks.
Whatever the energy sourcefor your hot water supply, we can help.
